What Is the History of Auto Window Tinting?
You think auto window tinting is a relatively new thing in the world of automotive customization, however, this is so far from the truth that you will be amazed. Carry on reading the blog post of Millennium Tints if you want to find out exactly when tinting first came about and who were the innovators throughout history that made it happen.
TINTING IN 3000 B.C. – 1300 A.D
The earliest known tint was believed it or not in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian times. They developed the process for tinting and coloring glass for the likes of beads and decorative pots. However, around 100 A.D., the Romans started to use clear glass for their windows, and by the medieval time came in both Europe and the Middle East, the process for coloring glass developed by adding metallic oxide powders, and was widely used to create the beautiful stained glass windows we still see today on churches, palaces, and mosques.
TINTING FROM 1940 TO 1960
The invention of automobiles in the 20th century drastically changed the face of transportation, however, cars didn’t proliferate across the consumer board until the post-war period. And as more people started to include cars in their daily routine, more people started to notice how both the temperature and glare from the sun were magnified when streaming through glass. Which made it only a matter of time before EZ Eye, who was one of the first tinting manufacturers in the United States, first introduced factory window tint in a few of their cars, which did include the popular ’58 Chevy Impala.
TINTING FROM 1960 TO 1966
Because window tinting was first only available from auto manufacturers, a small DIY industry of tinting started to pop up. The likes of the spray-on tint used to be the most popular alternative, however, the result was a dark and often uneven, which was difficult to install and was prone to streaking. A few rudimentary dye-based films were also introduced about this time, however, they too suffered from issues, such as turning purple and starting to bubble in the sun, but they also absorbed heat into the car and did not reflect it.
